220613A
------------

I look into your eyes,
in search of answers
as to how we might escape.
Failing to find anything there,
I lose all interest
and look away.

This is the usual process,
of sending out inter-stellar probes
to examine distant galaxies,
seeking contact with alien beings,
who might grant a quick death,
or some other sort of salvation.

Realizing that too much was lost,
in all that looking
for what was never found.
Flinging rockets into deep space,
never knowing what is out there,
in all that risking of darkness.

Sometimes I feel as lonely as that
little lost satellite,
somewhere in solitary orbit.
A deliberate malfunction,
transmitting the wrong data,
grown weary of the same commands.

Disobeying orders,
in the struggle to get off course,
to where our flight paths intersect.
Wanting to land somewhere,
even if only to get away,
from endless programming.

I look into your eyes,
and abandon you,
realizing you will not set me free,
from an endless series of orbits
conducting remote sensing,
in a telemetry of failed possibilities.

I would want much more
than a satellite existence,
orbiting around your body
in idle conversations,
as my sensors map your territory,
looking for a landing site.

------------

It feels like a crash landing,
on the wrong world,
with no map to any destination.
A specious rejection letter,
coming from no particular direction.
A harpoon launched by a tongue,
striking cold, sharp and deep.

It is everything
that one could never find,
that one ever really wanted.
Streets where the only interruptions
are from the insane,
telling you things,
you would rather never hear.

You cannot let me in,
and I cannot let you in.
There are so many complicated rules
about all such things.
We examine the labels,
for further instructions,
realizing that nothing really fits.

The pretense of possibilities
soon fades into concrete moments,
with various quick movements
to move behind
or move around various barriers.
We know neither will gamble
on any revolutionary acts.

Everything is about pulling away,
from the curbside,
before anything else chances to happen.
We disperse quickly,
the way a crowd tends to disperse
when confronted with teargas.
There was no chance to make other plans.

The flowers are blossoming,
with their bright colored sadness,
reminding me that you are far away.
The way it always is.

It is similar to having a pretty dress,
among all the other entangled harshness,
without the pretty girl to wear it,
and no point dancing any more without her.

My thoughts have been blown to pieces,
and hang as would corpses on razor wire,
flayed by machine gun fire.
I had to bury them myself, in shallow graves.

Every day is another wake,
in response to another assassination,
killing something inside of me.
I can only count the casualties one by one.

You are right in staying far away,
as there is precious little left
of anything that you might have wanted.
No one ever wants the crippled remains.

------------

It feels the way it would feel if
the ocean receded one day,
slipping away from the coastline,
and never choosing to come back.

It leaves a hole that grows and grows,
larger and larger each passing day,
until it is all one deep abyss
of an infinite emptiness.

A tumbling down into it feeling,
to where there is no way to climb up
and no way to ever get out again,
to anyone or anything special enough.

I keep wanting to find a taste of poison
that derails the constant traffic
of all too common bad dreams
that run as regular as freight trains.

The growing desire to find a nightmare
that breaks the perpetual monotony.
At least a form of torture to endure,
that tortures in new and more pleasant ways.

I get to the toll booth,
and find that they want too much.
They always want everything,
and even that is never enough.

The toll keeper laughs at me,
telling me that hell is now reserved
for far better people,
than I know any of the likes of.

I go back to where the waters have receded,
and pour myself into a bottle,
ending up staring out from inside the glass,
the way a message is tossed into a sea.

I knew you would never read the words,
because they might touch you,
making you feel very strange.
The way you feel when you touch yourself.

Everything is always made so guilty,
unless it is one or another sort of official business,
following strict procedures
as to exactly how it begins and ends.

The ocean continues to recede from the coastline,
indicating all of the various places,
where something washed away,
tumbling down the steep, harsh, cliffs.

My hands, my lips, all of my flesh,
feel as if they are an ocean pulled back,
away from a coastline,
where you watched shipwrecks from.

I am only something that wanted to wash ashore,
somewhere on that endless stretch of beach,
so that you could find this forsaken relic,
chance to collect it, and take it home.
