For the past fourteen years I have been obsessed
with an abandoned lunatic hospital perched on a
hill north of Danvers, Massachusetts, on New England
Interstate 95. From the highway, automobile occupants
can look up at the foreboding tree-shrouded silhouette
of Danvers State, one of the most mysterious landmarks
in our region. I first saw it from a moving vehicle
sixteen years ago. The sight of this strange
pointed beast of a structure rising before me as
I sped past raised many only partly articulated
questions: Is that really an asylum? Do inmates still
live there? How old is that place? Who built it?
I believe many have asked similar questions
as they passed the former Danvers State Hospital.
I have learned that it was standard practice for
parents to threaten disobedient children with a
corrective trip up the hill to "The Witches' Castle."
The witch trials did not occur in Salem, but
in Salem Village, or present-day Danvers.
Lovecraft described a scene that has presented itself
many times as I have driven by Danvers:
"On the far horizon were the open countryside's
purple slopes. Against these . . . rose the
spectral hump of Federal Hill, bristling with
huddled roofs and steeples whose remote outlines
wavered mysteriously, taking fantastic forms as
the smoke of the city swirled up and enmeshed them.
Blake had a curious sense that he was looking upon
some unknown, ethereal world which might or might
not vanish as in a dream. . .
In an effort to understand the bedlam, I interviewed
a number of ex-employees and ex-patients.
From both research and interviews the one irrefutable
conclusion I have come to regarding Danvers is
that people either loved or despised it. Both points
of view were held with equal passion. On the same day
that one person would tell me "Danvers was a beautiful
place, so peaceful, and what a view!" another would
say, "That place is the Witch's Castle--
right out of Edgar Allen Poe. There were maggots
in the food there!" To understand such a place
one has to accept that both points of view are valid.
Danvers was a home that degenerated into a nightmare.

Biography- Knight worked for the CIA on loan
from Interpol. Born in London, he was one of the
best biochem scientists working in the intelligence community.
The CIA needed Mitchell to work on a biochemical weapon
to end the Vietnam War. He created a virus that would weaken
its victims until they hovered near death, waiting
for the antidote.
The virus was to be introduced into the water supply of Vietnam,
but Mitchell wouldn't stand for that much human destruction.

Clark sees similar phenomena underlying our modern
chemical panics, although the hapless victims are
no longer executed; instead, they lose their jobs,
businesses, and communities. The governing authorities
today are often just as craven in capitulating
to public fears.
He notes that a key question is "the kind of evidence

The standard of proof here is not much higher than the
spectral evidence and the "voluntary" confessions
accepted by the Salem court.
