Well, you were first but there is no way I would call you a bozo! :-)
I feel it is a careless waste of resources when one considers what must
amount to terabytes of duplicated crap flashing around the world and
cluttering up servers everywhere. It also shows a lack of respect for
probably the first instant international conference medium freely
available to the man-in-the-street from most countries. I believe it
also shows a lack of respect toward hoped for readers. My personal
choice when I come across never ending streams of quoted and requoted
messages posted in their entirety, well, it usually means I do not
bother reading whatever few (or many, as the case may be) words the
poster has added on to the end.
Many believe the downhill slide began in September 1993 when AOL began
offering Usenet access to its customers. Before that, every September
would see hordes of new university students joining in and it would
take a few months for these newbies to acclimatize to the posting norms.
The influx of AOL subscribers, many of them ably fitting the
descriptions in Mr. Follett's piece, led to the "September that never
ended". :-) Although AOL dropped access to Usenet early in 2005,
Google Groups appears to have picked up the torch to ensure "Eternal
September" continues.
What I do find strange is that in "the groups", not trimming follow ups
seems to be on the increase and some posters who used to trim have
ceased to do so. I blame this in part on their fear of certain loud
proclamations posted about the "evils" of trimming, thereby exposing
said proclaimers total lack of knowledge as to how Usenet is supposed to
work. If they _do_ know how it is supposed to work then they are simply
lying in their hysterical "do not trim" messages.
All in all it is of no great import and the world will not get any
warmer or stop turning because of such posters. I'm just thankful I had
a decent education, am able to work things out for myself and can then
follow my own mind and not be one of the timid flock that cowers into
the nearest pen when the loud dog barks.
