You can continue to snooze since you have Messiah all safely squirreled away.
Messiah is performed traditionally at Christmas in the U. S. usually during
Advent even though it was originally written for and performed at Easter in
the mid 1700's.
In the larger cities in the States there are concerts featuring the entire
work and many churches will feature one or more of the choruses in their
Christmas concerts. I've sung most of the choruses at one time or another.
One city (Boston if memory serves) offered a sing-along concert where
everyone was given the music and words to the choruses and encouraged to sing
along with the choir. I never went to one like that, but have seen it
performed several times in different places.
It reminds me of the military.....long periods of relative boredom punctuated
by periods of intense excitement.
I sang in the church youth choir (and later the adult choir) and was a
'special' student of the organist and choir master. I used to sit in on the
bench between his legs at the great organ keyboard while he showed me how it
worked. I had absolutely no idea what might have been going on at the time,
I was merely fascinated with his mighty organ! It had about several thousand
pipes, the tallest being 32 feet and the smallest about the size of half a
cigaret.
I remember one Sunday one of the small pipes stuck open during the church
service and I was dispatched to the pipe room to find it and close it. It
wasn't easy...
Oh what fun we had with the organ! LOL
