It's more likely that his remailer stats aren't up to date
which is causing him to use an unreliable remailer or it's
the random latency of the remailer causing the delays.
If a latency isn't specified, the remailer will use a random
one which could vary anywhere between a few minutes or several
hours.
Rikard, I don't know if you're composing your messages manually
or if you're using a remailer client to do the work. If using
a remailer client, try updating your stats list and see if there
is an option to include a "Latent-Time:" directive.
If you are chaining remailers (sending to one remailer and using
another as an exit point), check the broken chain list to see
which combination of remailers aren't working.
Here is an example of a stats list. The latency column shows how long
on average it takes for a message to go through. The uptime shows the
probability of the message making it through.
