Dear Fred, Not all pedophiles have sex with children -- and some that
do aren't predators that hurt kids. Don't misunderstand me, I agree
that sexual relationships between adults and children are almost
always a mistake that can cause psychological damage in the society in
which we live. That is why I prefer to remain celibate, and why I
encourage other pedophiles to find safe and legal outlets for their
sexual needs -- outlets that do not involve children!
My belief is that we cannot control the feelings or desires that we
have, but we can and MUST control our behavior. It's easier for some
of us than others because not all the feelings we have are about sex.
I genuinely love boys, and I'm not willing to put them at risk just
because I'm horny. And, should I find a boy that I think is actually
willing and wanting -- I have to question whether I can accurately
judge their intentions. I mean, I know what I want them to want, and
we humans have a really bad tendency to believe what we want to
believe.
If you want, we can discuss Margaret Mead's work in Samoa and how
their rites of passage -- that involve sexual initiation at about age
14 -- helps contribute to making their society one of the easiest for
adolescents to maneuver. But since I don't live in Samoa, I'm not sure
how much that applies to me. And since the initiation is generally
heterosexual, that, again, doesn't seem to apply to me. But it does
point out that pedophilic sex in and of itself is not inherently bad,
and thus not necessarily a threat to society.
If you want, we can discuss the fact that adult males tend to remember
sexual involvement with adults fondly -- and this research goes all
the way back to Kinsey's original studies. Or we can discuss some
research that indicates that some boys may actually gain self-esteem,
self-confidence and social skills and improve in school when they are
involved in loving, sexual relationships with an adult man, but I
think the major flaw in such studies is that they never use a control
group where the boy is in a loving, non-sexual relationship with a
man; I would really like to see a comparison between those results.
But it all comes down to this: if you choose to believe that all
pedophiles are just sexual predators looking to get their jollies at
the expense of any kid they can get their hands on, you're no better
than people who think that African-Americans all like watermelon and
fried chicken, play basketball just because, shine shoes, operate
elevators and can't be as smart as white people. And the sad part is
that there are more pedophiles out there than we ever guessed, and
most of them don't want to hurt children. All they might need is a
little help in learning self-control, and there's no reason they need
to become the sexual predators that prey on the weak and repeat their
crimes every chance they get -- no matter how harsh the punishment
they receive. Punishment hasn't worked, maybe it's time to try
prevention.
