To answer your question about the name (even if it was a rhetorical
question), American football was born out of the evolution of rubgy
from its origin - soccer- the game you call football. Soccer players
that were upset about the forbidden use of hands formed the game of
Rugby, which gave American football its roots. Kickoffs, punts, field
goals and the point-after-touchdown kicks are pretty much the only
time the foot and the football meet.
In the early 1900s, American football was such a dangerous game that
in 1906, some 18 players actually died during the course of that
season, prompting then President Teddy Roosevelt to meet with the head
coaches of several Ivy League schools to encourage them to legalize
the use of the forward pass. Needless to say, the concept caught on
and was quickly adopted at the professional level.
