I just went through that particular portion of "Dragonsong" just after she
rescues the queen's clutch up until she takes off from Half Circle...for
good. It's not said specifically when she wrote that tune, but it is implied
that she wrote most of it the night after rescuing the clutch. Near the very
beginning of chapter 5, it states that she sought her cubicle and bed as
quickly as possible so she could "absorb" the events of the day. Given the
way Menolly is, she would have had time to write most of the song and hide
it in her usual space in the harper's files.
