Me neither, to tell the truth. It seemed oddly out of place to me.

In some ways I can appreciate why it was necessary -- Robinton had
become too good to be true, and she possibly felt she had to introduce
some flaws in him; and a lot of pain, I guess.

In that sense, I think it was necessary, though not particularly
interesting (some dark hint in a current book might have worked better
for me).
