Three main reasons:

[1] I don't have a portable device that plays FLAC files. I do have an
iPod that is bought and paid for so I'm not spending more on a FLAC
player.

[2] Where I live the FM bands are VERY crowded and I can't get a
consistently clear signal. Early on, I tried about a dozen different
transmitters with the iPod and none of them gave a satisfactory
performance. I have it connected to the stereo's USB port via the
digital port (not the headphone jack) on the iPod. Cleanest sound you
can get and no static at all.

[3] 320kbps MP3's sound great when there's wind, traffic, and road
noise. I'm a high-fidelity lover at home but on the road it's usually a
short trip and these are more than satisfactory to me.

I'm very happy with this arrangement. I have no need to upgrade.
