Far less overly sexual than Drum or Mandingo but without the harsh
cold sadism found in Russ Meyer's Black Snake Quadroon seems to have
attempted to produce a "kinder and gentler" plantation film. The
problem with this tact is it compares with attempting to let's say
make a musical about HIV/AIDS ravaging through artistic community of
New York... no wait that was Rent. Think of it more like trying to
tell the story of Daesh only ignoring the rapes, slavery, executions
and suicide bombers.
Not really a lot to say about this one. I will confess to have 'fast
forwded' a bit. My position is if you're going to go down this path
of the Plantation thematic you either do it like Spike Lee and layer
the characters or demonstrate it for what is was and make that harsh
or titular but there really isn't much else you can do with the
premise.
