Whether it be the 60-70's Exploitation or Blaxploitation films Pam
Grier was a far more prominent character than her peers, ie: Cherri
Caffero, (Ginger), or Margaret Markov (who shared the lead with Grier
in Black Mama White Mama). I would suggest that in many respects Pam
Grier is the face of both 'sploitations'.
Coffy was her first major lead and she is the epitome of what the
strong black woman of the 1970's was. Her hair was an Afro and not
styled straight, she demonstrated a disdain for racism and sexism so
neither white nor black men got away with anything and she played
within her psychical such that it was at least 'possible' to accept
her winning her fights.
Coffy is a classic female vigilante/revenge film with all the
necessary components including a very necessary multi-woman cat fight
where Coffy ensures that all of her opponents have their tops torn off
not to mention the danger of the "black perm" (you have to watch it to
see what I mean).
And we get to see what Dr. Sydney Freedmon theoretically got up to
after he fixed Hawkeye in Mash. Turns out he was not the good guy he
pretended to be at the 4007.
