I just checked a 1942 German military map-the 16th (Mot) Inf division
headquarters in the summer of 1942 was in Elista which is the present
day Republic of Kalmykia. It is called the Kalmyk steppes and is
basically desert type steppes. From there this German division sent
out long-range reconnaissance formations that reached the Volga river
delta and the shores of the Caspian sea.
Paul Carell in his book 'Hitler Moves East' has a whole chapter on
this division and how it became a thorn in the side of the soviets by
blowing up oil trains coming from Baku and headed to the oil terminals
of Astrakhan.

Lot of camels in this area.
