Thanks for the kind words, SL. I've always been a survivor and while it
would be lying to say I'd be satisfied living below my means, I'm old
enough that it wouldn't really sting much. I'm much more worried about
supporting my wife, who has a chronic medical condition.
One of my favorite sayings is "It's not a crisis. It's just the end of
an illusion." Easy to fall prey to an illusion, working in Silicon
Valley. I made a fair buttload of money, but still, given the reality of
living in a desirable location in the CA Bay Area, it was barely above
month-to-month. Now I'm nearing 60 and the luster has worn off. My
chances of getting re-hired are slim to say the least.
But as you say, FUCK 'EM.
And of course it's good to have handy friends. I had an HVAC company
come and quote me a price for replacing my heater. All told it came to
the absurd sum of 27K including bringing in an electrician to rip out a
bunch of shit and wire the new heater directly to the house wiring so
it's up to the latest code. So - I called up a friend who is handy with
electronics. We poked about and discovered the transformer was fried. We
went to the local heating, plumbing and air conditioning outlet (I had
no idea it was there, it's where the pros shop). $27.00. Meaning that I
saved $26,973.00. So, I'd advise finding a handyman before replacing
your unit.
OK, time to post hairy Asians!
