My unit runs fine, it's just old. And like you, about 5 years
ago(?)...hottest day of the year(they either die on the hottest or the
coldest, right?) my ac wouldn't come on. This was a Friday afternoon
so weekend rates now apply. It was too late to do anything about it
that day...except YouTube.
At the heat exchanger, motor wants to start but won't. Relays
click, YouTube videos say replace the start-up capacitor. Next
morning, luckily parts house for hvac is open till noon. I look up
the part anyway online and see it's cheap. So for $9 I can gamble and
buy and replace it myself. It's worth a shot. Replaced it, fuses put
back in...starts and runs till this day!
Any you know what's funny about this story? Every fucking
house on this street has...err, had the same make and model of
hvac(Trane). Both of the neighbors had theirs replaced and it might
have been the very same problem. The going rate would be about $3000
around here for a full unit replacement(I don't know what they paid).
Me? $9 fixed mine.
A simple little part and I'd wager at least one of the
neighbors was taken into buying a replacement. I've always known it's
cheaper to do things yourself. Plus you get the satisfaction.
I don't even know wtf you've got over there that would cost as
much as you said. Also one of my HS buddies owns an hvac company.
This is about 16(?) years ago, but at my last place, it didn't have
central heat and air. I called my friend and he installed a one ton
unit for $2300. I wouldn't call anybody else.
