The key may be that many or most are self-promoters, like Julie. They
really don't need anybody to distribute their work, so they can paywall it
themselves. Leaving usenet where? Nowhere. Not in the brave new world of
iPhones, Facebook, twitter, and the more than a billion YouTube viewers who
can nosh on the 300 hours of video being uploaded every minute of every
day. Over five billion views a day.
I'd venture to say that much of the commercial porn that going up on usenet
today is put up by the producers. People download it from one group and
upload it to another. Advertising that can't get much cheaper for them
(than free). Add some premium-only affiliate programs, and it's even better
than free. Not for you and me, for somebody else.
And now that nzb's and six-year retention have all but eliminated any
discussion of what's being posted (abme.a being a notable exception), is it
any wonder that usenet porn now is largely a silent, anonymous, stagnant
spincycle?
