Creatures can adapt to changes if the changes are gradual (like over
thousands or millions of years). But if the changes are sudden (like
over a century) and significant, then the creatures may not be able to
adapt fast enough.
Creatures can adapt to new places that they don't inhabit by slowly
expanding out and making adjustments to the new locale, which then
allows them to expand further out to nearby places that are similar to
what they currently inhabit, but are sufficiently different from where
they first started from.
Creatures can adapt to sudden changes if they are large in number and
procreate quickly: for example, bacteria that become immune to a drug
treatment like penicillin.
