Unless "home" means you live way out in the country where you may have to
defend property, no rifle in .223 or .308 is going to be better than a good
short barrel shotgun.
If you get an AR with a collapsible stock and 16" barrel it could work.
Just because the round does not do well on Deer does not mean it will not
work well on people at close range. The problem in a house would be too much
power. Almost any round you could get in either .223 or .308 is going to go
right through the person at those close ranges, and still have a lot of
energy left.
What I keep for home use now is a couple Kel-Tec rifles. I bought one in
.40S&W. It is so light and compact that it will move easily through the
house, and at close range is easy to use. I prefer it to a shotgun now. With
good HP ammo it may well go through a person, but will not have a hell of a
lot left by then.
