Go to http://www.free-av.com/ and download the free version of
AntiVir Personal Edition. AVG is an excellent antivirus program and I
have it along with Norton AV and several others on my system but the
AntiVir PE software found a number of dialers hidden in some zipped
files on my machine that were missed by AVG and Norton. Disable
the auto-protect function of your other antivirus or you will get constant
alerts while running a scan. I've been trying out different anti virus apps
and will post my results and I hope others will also post their experiences
with anti virus programs
Another thing you can try is to Google "free online virus scan", this will
point you to several sites were you may get your system scaned by an
uncorrupted anti virus program.
Another route is to go to:
http://www.misec.net/products/autostartexplorer/ and download
Auto Start Explorer. This will show all programs that run when you
boot up your machine. Hope this helps.
