I have just about had enough. I just ordered from Amazon and old
Christmas cartoon from the early 60s, "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol." At
the site, I learned that the last time I saw the cartoon -- on AMC,
about three years ago -- it had been heavily edited to make room for
more commercials. The law at one time restricted commercials to a few
minutes an hour, like maybe eight minutes. Long ago, an hour-long
program contained about 51 minutes of story. Now it's 44 minutes of
story. So many commercials make a show almost unwatchable. A feature
film -- forget about it! I don't know who would watch them cut for
commercials. Commercials disrupt the pacing and atmosphere. With DVD
rentals and with them relatively cheap to buy, I don't know who would
sit through a broadcast presentation of a film. A TV series will make
allowances in the pacing for commercials, but it still disrupts the
mood. I think commercials are the reason why reality shows are so
popular, as the commercials interruptions don't do anything to the mood.
I use a DVD recorder now to record most of what I watch, and before that
it was VHS. That way I can zip past the commercials. I rarely watch
anything during the actual broadcast time.
As for cable after midnight, almost half of the channels are
infomercials by 2 o'clock in the morning. If cable allowed us to pick
our channels a la carte, the market would fix this problem.
