Someone on another board may have cleared this up.
A little different than what I remember--I'd have to see the tape--but
could have been Georgia Governor Lester Maddox on the Dick Cavett show.
According to this, the insult from Cavett came just before a
commercial:

The argument then must have taken place during the commercial. But if
Maddox didn't leave till after the commercial (so was still in the
midst of yelling at Cavett when the show came back on) or left during
the commercial, then came back to yell at Cavett some more (and I do
remember whoever it was walking towards the host screaming at him) then
it could have looked to me as if it came out of nowhere when in fact
the beginning of the argument took place during the commercial.
In this case, Truman Capote would be the guest/sidekick. (In 1971 I
would have had no idea who he was. The name might have sounded
familiar, but that's it.)
This is supposed to have taken place at the end of the show, so no
wonder they wouldn't have time to sit around and discuss it--hence the
"no explanation" feeling I had.
