021113A
------------

When we were children,
we knew pointed sticks were dangerous.
We learned to use words
to defend ourselves,
never really thinking
that a pointed stick can easily kill
any user of words.

There are so many ways to die,
and so few ways to really live.
There is always the need
to try to avoid big questions,
conflicting with the necessity
for avoiding silence,
and slipping through cracks in between.

We were always pushed around,
becoming believers as to holding ground,
always trying to avoid falling.
It made us heros in our own minds,
defeating the imagined enemies,
who were never as quick as we were,
from where they hid in dark places.

Now we peel layers of meaning,
the way cooks peel onions,
trying to conceal the tears that well up.
Whatever we thought was there,
seems to have vanished away,
leaving us wondering where it went,
as to that guilty condition of innocence.

I was looking for a perfect lover,
but that too can be so difficult to find.
Polite hatreds are far more common
holding nothing all that intimate
and favoring various common lies.

I looked for her in heaven,
and I looked for her in hell.
I looked among the winners and the losers.
I looked her where none are sick,
and I looked where none are well.

I never found what I was looking for,
and no one ever really found me.
We are only only strangers here,
filling in that strange space
between the beginning and the end.

I do not know of anyone who came back,
from wherever they go to.
I was waiting for a taste of freedom.
Whatever had tantalized my senses
was always something that never arrived.

There are those who give what they choose,
the way kings throw bones to dogs.
They enjoy watching them fight for it,
staining the bone with at least a little blood.
Something to do between a prayer and a hunt.

I used to think I knew how it is done,
and in fact that might be it for some.
I keep watching from higher ground
where it is easy to see
that the knowledge was only dung and mud.

It is the kind of thing that comes too late,
in the whisper of breath that marks a life.
It was always the wrong time and place
for the type of ritual we needed to enact
to interrupt the steady practice of loss.

because you did not really want me.
I was only there for you,
and I know you did not care,
to know anything more about me.

I was captured by the light,
as it played upon your long dark hair,
taking me prisoner,
while I thought that there was a chance
you might never let me go.

I much prefer darkness now,
mostly keeping out of sight, laying low,
avoiding the torture of the light
playing upon your long dark hair,
as darkness tangles me into its strands.

------------

Too much has become dead,
and too much else has grown cold.
Late autumn always resembles a sermon,

Neither offering any real comfort.

I once thought I could warm you,
and you would warm me,
during those coldest of times,
when the sky tends to forsake the earth,
and the streets are emptied of the living.

Makes me ponder, a quick stray moment,
as to what little amusements of the mind
have currently taken you,
feathering some far away nest
with typical gestures of sudden impulse.

We are little better than crows,
when it comes to adding a little sparkle,
though I have never believed in shrines,
even if we are all martyrs
in one strange way or another.

Maybe you found the perfect cure,
for the sickness that passes as love,
in nearly every common instance.
You know I wanted more than that,
but that did not make any difference.

These eulogies I feel compelled to write,
offer no apologies, give no accusations,
simply noting cursory facts without detail.
Obscuring the names and calendar dates
in various customary ways.

We were victims of various intercessions,
meant to save us from happiness.
I have long forgotten what that really means,
giving further lip service to the lines,
in another make believe of indifference.

Everything is as it should not be,
but that is the same as it ever was.
I am no longer sure that we had any chance
at being ever being able to change it.
Every victory is a string of little defeats.

-------------------------------------------------

021113E
-----------

You were not the first
who chose not to take away some of my pain,
giving me a little more in its place
of everything that I had too much of,
while taking away a little of anything else.

It always seems so carefully measured.
The way some people make coffee,
applying principles of absolute precision,
and then counting their words,
as though working for a very strict editor.

I could see that you did not want me to want you
enough to deviate from the usual ceremony.
You were only interested in pleasing yourself,
only needing the smallest feeling of power
over the already failed situation.

Nothing better than having a kill ratio,
that you can add to your mission report.
You will claim I was shot down,
as nothing more than another hostile,
strayed into friendly territory.

I tried to signal something,
but there was too much radio interference.
That and your ideological assumptions
about how all such things need to end,
according to a battle plan.

Perhaps you were looking for someone
who always keeps his armor on,
and worries continually about going soft.
Never a soft moment,
as he stabs you repeatedly.

You knew I was not want you wanted,
because I would worship you too much,
preferring beauty to death,
while he always chooses death over beauty.
Making me the odd man out.

021113F
-----------

I stopped reading poetry
to various circles of people,
because there were too many poets there
with their crippled tongues.

They were the sort of people one meets
who never really allow one to forget

pressed and preserved between the pages.

021113G
------------

I always came too late,
to any token form of almost salvation.

You only summoned me up
to tell me about him.

Then you banished me,
the way the magi banish spirits.

to ever practice with you.

The damned should be kinder
to each other.

who was ever really saved.

If nothing else broke them,
then it was their faith in the impossible.

Or maybe it was their ugliness,
when I compare that to your beauty.

Everything I ever wanted about us
was something much simpler.

Something I would want to remember
even after I died.

No one has given me that yet,
having given only what I need to forget.

Someone something similar to you,
to put a spell on me that I cannot undo.

-----------------------------------------------

021113H
------------

There has been the usual talk,
going round the usual circles,
that I am too dangerous for you.
They find indications in my syllables,
perhaps judging the intonation,
and counting up the vowels
in some mystical ratio
against the numbers of consonants.
They search for hidden meanings.

No knowing what I might do,
with someone as beautiful as you.
There is the usual talk about town,
that says we would break circles,
letting it all loose on them,
as to everything they tend to fear
about portentous events,
that change the atmosphere
and break down the resistance.

I kept my dreams a careful secret,
knowing the slightest leak
would lead to an enemy attack.
We would have to take them by surprise,
somewhere entirely unexpected,
giving them no chance to prepare,
even the least sort of defense
against whatever we chose to do
in our battle of love and beauty.

There are those who want nothing
except surrender,
threatening with the common curse
that whomever keeps fighting
will fight alone forever.
Maybe it really is true,
but I could only surrender to you
in a way that you would take me,
in a battle of love and beauty.
