REFUTATION OF A REJOINDER TO A REBUTTAL OF A WEAK CRITIQUE OF PURE REASON
All synthetical principles of understanding are valid only as
immanent dialectical attempts of pure reason to establish a
theology in perfect harmony therewith, as ideas which are the
parents of irresistible illusions.
But the use of the faculty of reason in this rational mode of
regarding nature is either physical or hyperphysical, or, more
properly speaking, immanent or transcendent. What the chemist
does in the analysis of substances, what the mathematician
in pure mathematics is obscured on another side by the fact that
this kind of a priori cognition shows a certain similarity in
character with the circumference of the moon when viewed
more certainly by the naked eye.
The hypothesis of an independent cause, or of a wise ruler of
the universe, lies solely in the subject, being regarded as
objective, and hence has only private validity in relation
to the essential aims of human reason (teleologia rationis humanae).
The metaphysics of corporeal nature must contain only the
principles of an a priori cognition of nature on the contrary
as the sum of all sensuous objects, consequently, as it is
presented to us.
Human reason has never wanted a metaphysic of some kind, since
it has never been able to keep this sphere of thought and cognition
pure from all admixture of foreign elements.
This synthesis of conceptions cannot be presented a priori,
uninfluenced by any empirical element, but is properly applied
to the task of illustrating and applying it didactically.
Mature judgment refuses to be any longer entertained
with illusory knowledge, but seeks rather establish a sound
worldview grounded in questionable assumptions and grand
pretensions according to eternal and unchangeable natural laws.
According to that maxim of universal law, although all knowledge
must begin with experience, it is a non sequitur to suppose that
all knowledge arises out of experience. Rather, it arises
ex nihilo from the luminiferous aether of fideism and from an
Ontological Argument that makes room for faith in a deontological
moral system.
The synthetical categorical syllogism necessarily attains to the
conception of the absolute unity of logical procedure in
hypothetical ideas and necessarily produces the idea of the
absolutely unconditioned in a series of given conditions.
It is indubitably certain that given a regress in the series of
all conditions which are thereby imperatively required for the
the very conception of the condition and, if this condition is
itself conditioned, to another condition- and so on through all
the members of the series. This proposition is, therefore,
analytical and has nothing to fear from transcendental criticism
of the categorical imperative or bqhatevwr.
But this will be rather an amusement than a labour.

I don't think that Silber can be fairly characterized as a
"religious zealot." Though, he is a man of faith, he is clearly
too intellectually sophisticated
Silber steadfastly refused to include "sexual orientation" in
the university's anti-discrimination discalimer. As a result,
some students who suffered from homophobic harassment has no
recourse inside the university system (harassment of that sort
would have to go through Boston PD, which has its own hate
crimnes clause).
Silber also had a hand in dismantling and banning the gay-
straight alliance from BU academy (a private prep school
attached to the BU system)
In the discussion concerning John Silber's homophobia, it should
be noted that he had a gay son who tragically died from AIDS.
Kant and Homosexuality
Clearly his homophobia stems from Kantian ethics. By simple
logic, homosexuality cannot be universalized by categorical
imperative and is therefore immoral. Furthermore, Kant would say
that it is our duty to be heterosexual.

Mary Pinchot Meyer, JFK Mistress, Assassinated By CIA, New Book
Less well known was Meyer's friendship with then-Harvard
professor and LSD guru Timothy Leary, whom she visited several
times at his office in Cambridge, Mass. Janney's book contains
the most exhaustive account to date of Meyer's communication
with Leary, who died in 1996. Much of Janney's account is based
on interviews Leary gave to another Kennedy conspiracy
enthusiast, the investigative journalist and author Leo Damore.
Damore had been doing research for a book about Meyer before he
committed suicide in 1995. In 2004, Janney purchased Damore's
notes and audio recordings on the Meyer case from his estate.
Janney's principal thesis is that Meyer and Kennedy were deeply
in love and experimented with drugs together. Partly as a result
of his relationship with Meyer, an avowed pacifist, Kennedy
began to question the American military buildup that
characterized the Cold War, according to Janney.
Like others before him, Janney posits that Kennedy's
assassination was the result of a CIA plot to eliminate the only
man in the way of the agency's total control over U.S. foreign
policy. Those same forces, Janney argues, viewed Meyer, an
intimate confidante of the late president, as a similar threat.
"Understandably preoccupied with Jack's assassination, she
maintained a collection of 'clippings of the JFK assassination'
in the bookcase in her bedroom, next to the place where she kept
her diary," Janney writes. "The lingering question was how far
Mary had gone in her investigation, and what impact it might
have had."
Janney's theory is that an Army lieutenant and suspected CIA hit
man named William Mitchell shot Meyer. The author says this
hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that neither the U.S.
military nor Georgetown University, where Mitchell said he was a
professor, have any record of him. Damore claimed to have spoken
on the phone with Mitchell in 1993, and told his lawyer that
Mitchell confessed to him that Meyer's murder was "standard CIA
procedure."

Fanon, Albert Memmi and Jean-Paul Sartre on colonialism and
postcolonialism; Pierre Vidal-Naquet and Henri Alleg on torture;
Henri Lefebvre and Louis Althusser on Marxist theory; Daniel
German, Davis had access to political and cultural analyses that
hadn't yet circulated in English: her sense of radical politics
was informed by French and German political philosophers, and
her understanding of their thought was in turn informed by the
political climate around her.
Meanwhile, whatever their differences and quarrels,
intellectuals in that large ideological swath known as the
Parisian left found in the cause of Angela Davis a symbol for
their own aspirations.

I'm going to be dissin' on Kant. If you loathe that sort of
thing, maybe you'll enjoy reviewing the results of last year's
poll by Brian Leiter, according to which Kant is the third most
important philosopher of all time -- which should remind you
that Kant's reputation is plenty safe from the likes of me.
According to Kant in The Metaphysics of Morals (not to be
confused with his Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals):
(1.) Wives, servants, and children are possessed in a way akin
to our possession of objects. If they flee, they must be
returned to the owner if he demands them, without regard for the
cause that led them to flee. (See esp. pages 278, 282-284
[original pagination], Gregor trans.) Kant does acknowledge that
the owner is not permitted to treat these people as mere objects
to "use up", but this appears to have no bearing on the owner's
right to demand their return. Evidently, if such an owned person
flees to us from an abusive master, we may admonish the master
for behaving badly while we return what is rightly his.
(2.) Homosexuality is an "unmentionable vice" so wrong that
"there are no limitations whatsoever that can save [it] from
being repudiated completely" (p. 277).
(3.) Masturbation is in some ways a worse vice than the horror
of murdering oneself, and "debases [the masturbator] below the
beasts". Kant writes:
"But it is not so easy to produce a rational proof that unnatural,
and even merely unpurposive, use of one's sexual attribute is
inadmissible as being a violation of duty to oneself (and indeed,
as far as its unnatural use is concerned, a violation in the
highest degree). The ground of proof is, indeed, that by it a
man surrenders his personality (throwing it away), since he uses
himself as a means to satisfy an animal impulse. But this does
not explain the high degree of violation of the humanity in one'
s own person by such a vice in its unnaturalness, which seems in
terms of its form (the disposition it involves) to exceed even
murdering oneself. It consists, then, in this: That a man who
defiantly casts off life as a burden is at least not making a
feeble surrender to animal impulse in throwing himself away (p.
425). (If masturbation caused a permanent reduction to sub-
human levels of intelligence, this argument might make some
sense, but as far as I'm aware, that consequence is rare.)"
(4.) On killing bastards:
"A child that comes into the world apart from marriage is born
outside the law (for the law is marriage) and therefore outside
the protection of the law. It has, as it were, stolen into the
commonwealth (like contraband merchandise), so that the
commonwealth can ignore its existence (since it rightly should
not have come to exist in this way), and can therefore also
ignore its annihilation (p. 336)."

an absolute morality, which exists regardless of man's ability
to perceive it.

I first met Raphael at a party given by one of his fellow
students of creative writing, Cronan Minton, where I observed

The source of the disagreement as to the nature of Man,
Metaphysics, Epistemology and ethics stems, it seems to me, are

The vantage point or point of view of the viewer is the
determining, critical factor. From one point of view an
individual human male can be perceived as a single entity. That
point of view or vantage point probably can be most easily
recognized if defined as being a perspective external to the
individual being considered. Move closer to the subject and he
will be perceived less as an individual and more as a collection
or assemblage of systems at work in some sort of harmony
producing a behaving, conscious, organism.
Point is that I don't know how any of it works and basically you
don't either. If you don't know what I is then you certainly don'
t know how or why I behaves. Aristotle didn't have the advantage
of modern scientific information. If he had I think he would
have done a lot more with it than Objectivism. Yes. Yes. If I
accept the epistemology it makes sense. I can't discard all that
information gathered by behaviorists and other science and
technology in favor of what seems to me an absurd concept.

to care means, but I feel that I do. Please tell me what to feel
means just as soon as you know. Tell me what telling means too,
while you're at it.
Often I feel foolish when I consider the existence of an
intervening consciousness at all. I probably would never have
considered it had I not been taught to do so.
