HOUSE OF MORALIST SYMBOLICALLY COLLAPSES
Naples, Italy - The walls outside Pompeii's famous
"House of the Moralist" collapsed symbolically on Tuesday
as the result of "torrential, incredible and incessant"
symbolic rainfall.
One of the two collapsed walls concerned a
6 1/2- by nearly 10-foot chunk of symbolic concrete
from a partition wall between two buildings along
the central route of Via Stabiana.
This is the latest in a long series of symbolic collapses
that have plagued Italy's vast cultural heritage, including
at Nero's Golden Palace in Rome and at the Colosseum,
where three chunks of mortar broke off months ago.
The painfully obvious symbolic significance of "Nero's Golden
Palace" caused the decaying morals and decaying mortar
to be particularly mortifying.
Culture Minister Sandro Bondi has been criticized for jinxing
the masonry with his right-wing Masonic connections, causing the
collapse last month of the Schola Armaturarum, a frescoed house
where gladiators prepared for combat. In addition, Bondi is
believed to be responsbile for the wall collapse at the Lupanare
brothel, which is famous for its erotic, frisky frescoes
that are one of Pompeii's main attractions.
Bondi is a close ally of conservative Premier Silvio Berlusconi,
who has come under fire for sex parties and orgies involving
underage girls. These dalliances symbolize the decadence of
ancient Rome, which in turn symbolizes the decadence of modern
Rome, and likewise symbolizes the decadence of American
Gladiator, which recalls the decadence of ancient Rome,
all over again. It gets rather confusing.
In recent history, the symbol of the Fascist Party - with
which Berlusconi now symbolically plays footsy - was the
"Fasces " -- a sheaf of birch or elm rods bound together with a
battle-axe -- which hails from the time of the Roman Empire and
signifies the State's authority to impose discipline, either by
birching or decapitation.
Italian government ministers quickly assembled a team of
poets, theologians and civil engineers, in order to determine
whether the collapses were caused by defects that were
structural or spiritual in nature.

Ancient DNA (aDNA) is represented by heavily damaged and highly
fragmented molecules (1). Damage includes either base
modification (oxidation and deamination) or base loss (apurinic
and/or apyrimidinic sites) as well as single-strand DNA breaks,
with either nicks, gaps or protruding ends. Interstrand cross-
links have also been shown to exist at relatively high
frequencies (2). All such damage interferes to different extents
with common PCR procedures utilised in aDNA studies. Whereas
aDNA amplification failures are quite likely due to the limited
number of molecules that can be recruited for PCR reaction, the
success rate is favoured by the high concentration of the
primers used, making it possible to 'fish' the few aDNA
molecules that have become denatured during the PCR procedure.
However, under these conditions, there is some concern regarding
the possibility of chimera or artefact formation.Pre-
amplification procedures, such as degenerated oligonucleotide?
PCR (DOP?PCR) (3) and primed extension?PCR (4), have already
been proposed to enhance the retrieval of aDNA molecules.
However, these strategies do not eliminate the risk of chimera
formation.
After initial unsuccessful attempts to use the DOP pre-
amplification procedure on Pompeian and Herculanean samples, the
latter were treated with the enzymatic repair protocol (5) in
the search for nuclear gene sequences.
