050409A
-----------

It was all according to plan,
that nothing went right.
I am still too much a prisoner.
You are still too free.
I have learned too much.
You will never really learn.
There is no meeting in the middle.
There is nothing joined at the hip.
I am wishing for escape.
You want to be a captive.
I can only want for more.
You want for less and less.
It was all planned ahead,
long before we came.

-----------

Surface defects,
and the underlying flaws.
It shows in a quick glance,
on casual inspection.

It is the same as a footprint,
impression in the mud.
Disappointment washes away
if you give it a bit of time.

You practice doing less,
reducing the chance of damage,
avoiding all the the broken
dirty fallen angels.

Chance brings the predictable
varieties of destruction.
Some count as success,

You know before you start,
how everything gets used.
Everything turns to scrap,
as your clock runs down.

Nothing on the scorecard,
and the ticket is never punched.
You know they have all left,
and you are the only one,
that they really left behind.

You are frightened of mirrors,
knowing that they will not let you in.
The tea party is long over,
and the red queen already told you,
that it is off with your head.

You search the advertisements,
looking for that one moment
that you could never really find.
The alphabet poisons your fingers,
coming away from the page.

You want to put your fingerprints
on the surface of her skin,
while whispering forbidden names,
so that you can both become so dirty
that you never need to get clean again.

No matter what you have,
they always want
something else, something more.
You feel them carving,
at your bones
with their knives of wanting.
You hear them plotting
in the outer halls,
whispering their wanting.
The ancient inscriptions
did not tell you any more,
than ancient ways of wanting.

You wonder why I abandoned,
whatever it was you wanted,
shattering your greedy cup.
You never really wanted
whatever it was I wanted,
though I felt your knives of wanting
carving away whatever was left
of me and what I wanted.
The wanting never really ends,
and when I wanted you I knew,
you only wanted to be wanted,
and then you do not really want me.

The lukewarm season arrives,
tepid, with a stale smell,
the way decay stirs up,
having been delayed a while,
returning to life from cold sleep.
It all feels like a long winter kill,
slowly uncovered, stretched out
having left an indent in the mattress
the way a corpse leaves a dead  mark
pressed into damp impacted dirt.

It is the way that it tends to end up,
when you hope too damn much,
as to chancing into better times ahead.
You end up chalk marked

another hit and run victim
of their marching band parades.
You went to sleep among friends,
and you woke up among strangers.
It is the way that things change.

You thought you had hit bottom,
but it is still a long way down.
You go out on the town,
finding that you have lost your name.
You get a  frostbite handshake,
so you start to count your fingers.
You find there is nothing you had
that cannot chance to fall away.
You try to rally your troops,
only to find you are digging a grave.

Your teachers never warned you
of anything as deadly.
Your loves never taught you
any contentment or bliss.
You are not welcome on the bleachers,
and you are not on the team.
You practiced the hardest,
but they disqualified your score.
You thought you were on target,
only to find a hit is just another miss.

We were annihilated,
where your good luck
chanced into my bad luck.

The universe ended,
right there and then,
in various cancellations.

Why I never look up anymore,
knowing there is  nothing in the heavens,
for a slowly dying man.

050409G
------------

Whenever you came to me,
no matter who you really were,
you always had someone else.
That became the only real thrust
of our stretch of conversations,
dancing words around the subject.

I have a large collection
of various detailed clinical descriptions
as to what each of them did to you.
How they each had you,
each in their own peculiar ways,
and what chanced to come of it.

You came to the wrong type of priest,
and I had to sacrifice you again,
along with the broken and the lame,
filed away as a generic category
in an unnamed, numbered file,
among my worthless memories.
