In a shocking display of the growing clout
of the undead, Hunter S. Thompson's
profanities from the next world scorched
not only the ears of David Allen, Assistant
General Manager of KREX-TV, Grand Junction
Colorado, but the entire radio station building
as well. It was really a rather comical
picture from hell.
"I'll show you p*icks the Spirit of the F-in Dead!",
Thompson said, in a CNN candlelight seance.
"We ghosts got more G-damn fightin' spirit than
any Colorado high school pep rally that ever left
a big-mouth mediash-t assoul like you
lyin' in a dark alley"
The flames, climbing high into the Colorado sky,
seemed strangely beautiful to many observers.

Thanks for your letter of July 7. I was
particularly struck by the fact that you
"take exception to the profanities
utilized in (my) letter" . . .
I take exception to 99% of the cheap goddamn garbage
you put on the air. Your scheduling is a monument
to everything rotten in America . . . and you have
the gall to sit there and call my July 3 letter
"profane." You ignorant freak; from now on
I'll address you on your own level.
You're a fine example of the kind of waterhead
who has crippled the whole television medium.
If you think my letter was profane, you should
take a look at the Real World sometime--the world
you tried to censor when you cut CBS News.
But it's still out there, old sport, and it's
closing in. Did you really think you could check out
of reality by fleeing Pennsylvania? Why don't you
send Gunsmoke's Marshal Dillon out to arrest me
for my profanity?

Fire destroys TV station building in Grand Junction, Colo.,
blocking local broadcasts
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) -- Fire destroyed the studios of
two television stations in a shared building, blocking local
broadcasts, officials said Monday.
The fire broke out Sunday morning in the studios of KREX-TV
and KFQX-TV. Five people inside escaped safely, but the
building was a total loss. Damage was put at about $6 million.
It wasn't clear when the stations, which have separate owners,
would broadcast again. KREX is a CBS affiliate and
KFQX is a Fox affiliate.
City fire investigators said were still looking into
the cause. The building, which was several decades old,
did not have a sprinkler system, fire department spokesman
Mike Page said.
Investigators could not enter the building during the night
because of flare-ups and the danger that the structure
would collapse, Page said.
KREX general manager Ron Tillery said it was the first
television station in western Colorado. The building
that burned had been a former radio station that
KREX adapted for TV.
"It is a sad day to see it destroyed that way,''
Tillery said after looking through the debris for
anything salvageable. "We have a chance now to do
something unique'' with a new building.

first backwater affiliate, it was nearly a temple.
I mean it. Across the United States, squat brick
buildings with aging towers and newer satellite dishes
dot our fruited plain. While many resemble old
elementary schools, they are in fact broadcast
shrines - holy spots where low paid supplicants
helped forge the Golden Age of local television.
Thus, residents of Grand Junction, Colorado lost

to the ground today.
