Jurgis spent half an hour walking and debating the problem.
There was no one he could go to for help--he had to manage
it all alone. To get it changed in a lodging-house would
be to take his life in his hands--he would almost
certainly be robbed, and perhaps murdered, before morning.
He might go to some hotel or railroad depot and ask
to have it changed; but what would they think,
seeing a "bum" like him with a hundred dollars?

Can you change me a hundred-dollar bill?" he demanded.

Lord, no!" said the other. "I only came in the day
before yesterday. It's the second time they've sent
me up on a trumped-up charge--I've had hard luck
and can't pay them what they want. Why don't you
quit Chicago with me, Jurgis?"

The young fellow was so glad to see Jurgis that he
almost hugged him. "By God, if it isn't 'the Stinker'!"
he cried. "And what is it--have you been through
a sausage machine?"

"No," said Jurgis, "but I've been in a railroad wreck
and a fight."

FIG. 1 illustrates a differential 10 generally of the
type disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,237,483.
The differential essentially comprises a carrier 11
having a bevel gear 12 secured thereto and adapted
to be driven by an input pinion 13. A pair of opposed a
nd longitudinally spaced helical face gears 14 and 15
are attached to axles 16 and 17 respectively, adapted
to be operatively connected to the wheels of a vehicle
(not shown). The carrier and axles are adapted for
rotation by axially spaced roller bearing assemblies
18 and 19.

Four sets of three intermeshing pinion gear means or helical
pinions 20 (two shown) mesh in interconnected relationship
between the face gears for differentially permitting one
of the face gears to rotate faster than face other gace gear.
Each pinion is mounted on a shaft 21 having each end thereof
rotatably mounted on the carrier by a spherical bearing
means 22. As will be hereinafter more fully described,
the spherical bearing means will function to provide a c
rowned bearing surface area contact therein upon imposition
of loads on the pinion during operation of the differential.

Steins Railroad Ghost town was once a thriving
railroad station town named after Captain Enoch Stein,
U.S. Army officer (sometimes spelled Steen)
who was the first Anglo witness to sign a treaty
with the Mimbres Apaches including Delgadito
and Victorio

Later, during the 1880s Apaches once again figured
into Steins history when the Army set up a heliograph
station on Steins Peak signaling information
regarding the movements of Geronimo. With the
surrender of Geronimo in 1886 citizens of the
Territory breathed a sigh of relief, but three
years later heliograph stations began blinking
messages once again to the Army hard on the
trail of Apache Kid. Later, gangs of horse thieves
and express robbers including Black Jack Ketchum
terrorized the little village.

In early 1880s Southern Pacific built track through
Steins Pass and the town was established as work
station for the railroad. Dwellings were made of
rough-cut lumber, adobe, and salvaged railroad ties.
Water hauled from Doubtful Canyon sold for a
dollar a barrel. Numerous businesses included
three saloons, two bordellos, a boarding house,
and a general store stood at the center of the
community. After World War II Southern Pacific
switched from steam to diesel, the work station
was closed down and the town began to die.

Dozens Injured in Amtrak Crash

Dozens of people are injured after a passenger train
collided with a freight train on Chicago's South Side.

Amtrak says it's waiting for information from
an event recorder -- a device similar to a plane's
black box -- to help determine what caused a collision
with a freight train today in Chicago.

Very interesting photo. I like it. You could have
called it "Railroad Bones." The only flaw I can see
in this photo is the infringing vegetation at the bottom.
Crop or clone that out, and this would be an outstanding
image. Still, even as is, I think it's worth 3TU.
Good composition, color, and clarity all work well
together here. Nice job.
