Guardsmen Sense Ghostly Presence In New Orleans
Save It Email It Print It (CBS5) The presence of the
supernatural and the influence of voodoo long have been
synonymous with New Orleans.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, members of the U.S.
military are saying that there's something spooky going on and
it's not just images of death and destruction that's haunting
them.
By all accounts, the Sophie B. Wright Middle School in New
Orleans sits empty and evacuated except for military personnel
who have taken over the campus as a staging site for missions
around the battered city.
But the men in uniform have the feeling that they're not alone.
It prompted a chaplain to utter this directive: "In the name of
Jesus Chris, I command you Satan to leave the dark areas of this
building."
Said Sgt. Robin Hairston of the California National Guard: "I
was in my sleeping bag and I opened by eyes and in the doorway
was a little girl. It wasn't my imagination."
Hairston wasn't the only one seeing things. Spc. Rosales Leanor
had her own close encounter.
"I was using the restroom and I just saw a little shadow,"
Leanor said. "Kind of looming in front of me."
Another member of the Guard unit said that she saw and heard a
little girl laughing when she opened a closet that contained
cleaning supplies.
At a Baton Rouge marina, boats were strewn like trash, but not a
shred of paper could be found. Except for the pages of a Bible
that was found by a soldier. It was open to the Book of
Revelation.
At a nearby church, nearly destroyed, another Bible was found,
showing the exact same passage from Revelation.
Like the power of nature, there is a power at work in New
Orleans that defies explanation.

Dead:Stone
New Orleans is a wet city. The air is wet, the ground is wet. If
you push a coffin into the ground, the water will push it back
up to the surface shortly after burial. Hello again! So to bury
their dead, early New Orleans folk filled their cemeteries with
above ground tombs. Sinking, leaning, decomposing, these stone
structures stand as a deathly spooky labyrinth of early New
Orleans history.
Blood Eating
We wandered from GK's apartment down Barracks street deeper in
the quarter. First restaurant his favourite Marisol. I had been
asking about the vampires, the goth folks, the white kids who
come to New Orleans to bring on the night. "They drink blood you
know, crazy shit. They carry little ampules and poke each other
and drink it." First thing I ate in new orleans was a blood
sausage tapa, GK's favourite dish at his favourite restaurant.

November 2, New Orleans, LA- The day of the dead march in New
Orleans on the night of November 2nd transformed from a
commemoration of those who have passed on into a spontaneous
anti-system demonstration. At some point participants dragged
newspaper boxes and garbage cans into the streets, blocking
Frenchman and Decatur, and broke the window of an SUV, before
calling it a night and retiring to await the outcome of who won
the election dumb, or dumber.
August 3, New Orleans, Louisiana- After police gunned down
Shotgun Joe Williams of the Hot 8 Brass Band, an angry crowd
gathered. Treme residents insulted and cursed the police saying
they had murdered him in cold blood. This was the second police

May 29, New Orleans, Louisiana- In the morning hours, the
Liberty monument was vandalized with anarchist anti-racist
graffiti. The monument honors the deaths of White League members
who staged an armed coup against the reconstruction government
and equal rights for black and creole people. This attack was
aimed at white supremacist David Duke and his supporters who
held a conference in the suburbs of New Orleans that weekend.

March 10, New Orleans, LA- Taken from the Tulane University
Hullaballoo: "Disturbance: Two local residents attempted to gain
access to the Reily Recreation Center March 10, but were denied
access because they were not Tulane members. The non-affiliates
of Tulane refused to leave the center claiming that the policy
to only allow members entry was not fair. TUPD arrived to the
scene and escorted the men off campus." Tulane University is a
school that costs over $30,000 per year and is like a private
country club for the young upper class. Small refusals like this
happen every day. Acts of resistance are everywhere all the time.
When we all get together and begin to demand an end to our
impoverished lives, we will be able to translate these small
acts of defiance into an entirely new world.
February 7, New Orleans, LA- War monger and pop-country singer
Toby Keith, who paraded as the grand marshall of the Krewe of
Orpheus, was attacked with red, white and blue paint bombs on
the night of Monday February 7. Sources say that there were
multiple hits including one hard hit to the back of the neck.
Unfortunately only a blue paint bomb splattered on him and his
cowboy hat, but it did halt the performance of one of his "hits."
The mystery assailant(s) escaped into the night, leaving Toby
Keith with a boot up his ass because it's the New Orleans way.
January 3, New Orleans, LA- Anarchist graffiti in solidarity
with striking newspaper workers in Ohio has been appearing near
the Times-Picayune buildingfor several weeks. The Times-Picayune
has encouraged their workers to go to Ohio and work as scabs to

Blackwater Down
The men from Blackwater USA arrived in New Orleans right after
Katrina hit. The company known for its private security work
guarding senior US diplomats in Iraq beat the federal government
and most aid organizations to the scene in another devastated
Gulf. About 150 heavily armed Blackwater troops dressed in full
battle gear spread out into the chaos of New Orleans. Officially,
the company boasted of its forces "join[ing] the hurricane
relief effort." But its men on the ground told a different story.
Some patrolled the streets in SUVs with tinted windows and the
Blackwater logo splashed on the back; others sped around the
French Quarter in an unmarked car with no license plates. They
congregated on the corner of St. James and Bourbon in front of a
bar called 711, where Blackwater was establishing a makeshift
headquarters. From the balcony above the bar, several Blackwater
guys cleared out what had apparently been someone's apartment.
They threw mattresses, clothes, shoes and other household items
from the balcony to the street below. They draped an American
flag from the balcony's railing. More than a dozen troops from
the 82nd Airborne Division stood in formation on the street
watching the action.
In an hourlong conversation I had with four Blackwater men, they
characterized their work in New Orleans as "securing
neighborhoods" and "confronting criminals." They all carried
automatic assault weapons and had guns strapped to their legs.
Their flak jackets were covered with pouches for extra ammunition.
When asked what authority they were operating under, one guy
said, "We're on contract with the Department of Homeland
Security." Then, pointing to one of his comrades, he said, "He
was even deputized by the governor of the state of Louisiana. We
can make arrests and use lethal force if we deem it necessary."
The man then held up the gold Louisiana law enforcement badge he
wore around his neck. Blackwater spokesperson Anne Duke also
said the company has a letter from Louisiana officials
authorizing its forces to carry loaded weapons.
"This vigilantism demonstrates the utter breakdown of the
government," says Michael Ratner, president of the Center for
Constitutional Rights. "These private security forces have
behaved brutally, with impunity, in Iraq. To have them now on
the streets of New Orleans is frightening and possibly illegal."
Blackwater is not alone. As business leaders and government
officials talk openly of changing the demographics of what was
one of the most culturally vibrant of America's cities,
mercenaries from companies like DynCorp, Intercon, American
Security Group, Blackhawk, Wackenhut and an Israeli company
called Instinctive Shooting International (ISI) are fanning out
to guard private businesses and homes, as well as government
projects and institutions. Within two weeks of the hurricane,
the number of private security companies registered in Louisiana
jumped from 185 to 235. Some, like Blackwater, are under federal
contract. Others have been hired by the wealthy elite, like F.
Patrick Quinn III, who brought in private security to guard his
$3 million private estate and his luxury hotels, which are under
consideration for a lucrative federal contract to house FEMA
workers.

This other JOHN BROWN
Research of passenger arrival records at the port of New Orleans
reveals that a ship, the SS Rover out of New Providence, Nassau,
captained by Wm Sawyer, arrived in the port of New Orleans with
two John Brown entries. The record is as follows:
Passenger number -
56 John Brown (45 - male)
57 ----?--- Brown (35 - female)
58 John Brown (16 - male)
59 ----?--- Brown (14 - male)
60 Geo Brown (12 - male)
(The symbol ----?---- above indicates faded ink, impossible to
read.)
All passengers except these last few were listed as Irish. These
last were boldly noted as being from England. Of course, John
Brown tells that he embarked from Liverpool, England, in March
of 1850. The only flaw is that the Rover arrived in New Orleans
on June 10th, in 1853, not 1850.
One must remember that 50 years had passed by the time John was
asked to recount his early life. We suspect John left Liverpool
with his father and brothers in late March of 1853 and reached
New Orleans on June 10th of that year, celebrating the
anniversary of his christening while at sea.
