Then there was trying to explain it.....the biggest mistake of all.....

There is an explanation. It is expressed when the Prisoner is
transported, cell and all, singing merrily along the way: "Them bones,
them bones, them dry bones...."

Any further explanation would have led to a premature end to the
entire episode.
