For someone who didn't know the answer you sure talk big - if you don't know

This is a bit of a bad start though - don't you think?
A friend who actually knows about these things tells me that as this glyph
isn't actually used in any language ... and it was "invented" to fill a void
in the (german) printing trade in the late 17th century.
Hence the clouded definition and usage rules - The name is derived via
"crosshatch" (originally engravers and artists created fonts ... so the term
was in everyday use by them.)

it's been bastardised (or is that bastardized?) and adopted for many diverse
uses
so just like the "correct" English" spelling depends on which side of the pond
