Teenager conned chatroom friend into stabbing him
BY PA NEWS
=20
=20
=20
A teenaged boy was found guilty today of masquerading as a =
spy in an internet chatroom to persuade another boy to try kill him in =
an "extraordinary suicide attempt".
=20
=20
The perpetrator, who was 14 at the time, groomed a =
16-year-old with an "elaborate matrix of deceit" which involved creating =
six fictional identities in the chatroom over a nine-month period.
On the orders of one of the fictional characters, a =
39-year-old female spy, the 16-year-old, called Mark (not his real =
name), bought a kitchen knife and stabbed his younger friend twice in =
the belief that by doing so he would be recruited by the British secret =
service.
In reality, the 14-year-old boy, called John (also a =
pseudonym), had fallen in love with his older friend, had tricked him =
into performing sex acts on a webcam and conned him into stabbing him in =
Altrincham, Greater Manchester.
Mark pleaded guilty to attempted murder and John pleaded =
guilty to perverting the course of justice and incitement to murder. The =
real identities of the two boys have not been published for legal =
reasons.
At Manchester Crown Court, Mark was today given a two-year =
supervision order and banned from any contact with his younger friend.
John was given a three-year supervision order and was banned =
from any contact with Mark. He was also told that he must only access =
the internet under adult supervision and must not enter chatrooms under =
any circumstances.
Judge David Maddison told the boys as he passed sentence: "I =
accept the thrust of the arguments advanced which are that there are a =
number of extraordinary features associated with this case.
"Skilled writers of fiction would struggle to conjure up a =
plot such as that which arises here.
"It's staggering to be dealing with a case that arises out =
of a 14-year-old boy's invention of false personalities, false =
relationships and events arranged for his own killing at the hands of a =
16-year-old boy who he had met via an internet chatroom."
Posing as the spy and promising sex and money, John sent =
messages to Mark ordering him to stab him to death.=20
On the following day, June 29, 2003, Mark "carried out his =
orders" and stabbed John once in the chest and once in the stomach.
But John did not die and spent a week recovering in =
Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.
The judge also addressed each boy individually. Turning to =
John, he said: "The end result is that you are to be sentenced for the =
extraordinary offence of inciting another to murder you and a further =
offence of perverting the course of justice.
"Offences of this kind in any normal circumstances would =
result in an extremely lengthy custodial sentence. But these could not =
be described as any normal circumstances."
The judge then turned to Mark: "I accept that fantastic =
though it seems when looked at now in the cold light of day that such a =
plot was presented to you, so convincingly were the characters presented =
to you that you really did believe you had been recruited by the Secret =
Service to kill your co-accused and face the consequences if you did not =
do so.
"You were the subject of a degree of exploitation and =
manipulation and found yourself in a position of conflict in your =
perceived public duty having been recruited by the state and your real =
friendship with the co-accused."
