For keygens, scan with a good anti-virus program, then click or
double click to run it. Most display a screen where you enter your name,
then you press a button labled generate, and the key appears in a box.
These you enter into the programs registration box.
If it doesn't work then the keygen is probably for a different version
of the program.
Patches come in two or more flavours.
One you virus scan, then put the .exe in the same folder as the program
installed to, to replace the original with the cracked executable.
The other you scan, put in the program folder, then run it by clicking
or double clicking, it then alters the executable to bypass the
registration. For this to work the patch version has to match the program
version, otherwise you get a patch failed, wrong version message.
P2P downloads usually include the correct patch or keygen, but
again, virus scan after downloading.
