This question refers to the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, which just finished
its first season.

--

I have a bit of a challenge with respect to an obscure musical instrument.
I'm hoping someone with a serious knowledge of instruments can shed some
light on something for me.

I just watched the season finale of Boardwalk Empire and right after the
announcement about Warren Harding's election as President, which occurs less
than 5 minutes before the end of the episode, there is a scene of the
musicians in the balcony starting a song. One of them is playing one of the
strangest instruments I've ever seen. It looks rather like a violin and he
bows it like a violin but the body has something like the bottom half of a
saxophone attached to it. I can't pick out what it sounds like from the rest
of the orchestra so I don't know if it sounds like strings or brass. I can't
figure out what it is.

I remember seeing the same instrument a couple of times in previous
episodes, including a similar scene in the pilot and wondering what the heck
it is.

If anyone can educate me on what this thing is, I'd really appreciate it.
