I got a second confirmation today also. The 'rumor' is no longer.
What has long passed for USENET newsgroups 'support' on AOL
[ability to read some NG posts some of the time, (if at all) on AOL]
will fairly quickly be coming to an 'end'...
ALL AOL members *can* still read from + post to USENET NGs
at: http://groups.google.com/ [but not to any 'internal' AOL NGs].
The 'notice' being sent out in PFC offline downloads] claims that
dial-up users will lose all ability to read NGs, but as far as I know
news.individual.net accounts work over dial-up connections on any
3rd party news reader of choice; so, yes, ALL AOL users can still
read + post to at least some newsgroups at no extra cost.
So far, the only real notice AOL members are getting in way of
a 'heads up' to tell them NGs are about to 'die' on AOL is during
'Auto-AOL' ["Flash Session" for the die-hard AOL-ers] like this:

AOL newsgroups reading members are encouraged at this time
to find an alternate news server or news reader/ reading method
while there is still time + to subscribe to + read: alt.aol.tricks NG,
where I and I'm sure many other very long time AOL members
will continue to try to help newer AOL member USENET readers
to find their way around the internet or the AOL software interface.
