YEnc is not a file format. It's an encoding scheme like uuEncode,
binhex
and MIME. It achieves about a 25%-30% improvement over uuEncoding by
using all 8 bits instead of just 7 bits of each byte for NNTP
transmission. MIME is rarely used for news because it isn't very
portable. (Info about yEnc: www.yenc.org).
To process yEncoded data, you need one of the following:
a) a yEnc-enabled newsreader such as xNews (xnews.newsguy.com) or
Forte
Free Agent. Commercial newsreading software that you pay for should
also
have yEnc support -- if it doesn't, complain loudly. Email software
that
is not designed for binary newsreading may not have yEnc support. In
particular, neither Outlook Express nor the Mozilla email browsers
support yEnc, and there appear to be no plans at this time to offer
yEnc
support.
b) a proxy yDecoder such as yProxy. (A somewhat limited free
version
is available from www.yproxy.com -- find the Support FAQ and read
carefully.) Using a proxy yDecoder will enable email browsers to
decode
but not encode yEncoded data.
c) an offline yDecoder like yEnc32. To use an offline decoder, save
the message as plain text and run the decoder at your leisure.
