Sorry for the delay--I haven't looked in here in months...
Anyway, I'll cast my vote for the latter, but I'll also add that it also
has to do with (1) the forced re-segregation of the sexes that's been
taking place over the last dozen years *and* with (2) a certain
misplaced cultural populism that's been going on for the last three
decades. The new big shorts look ugly *on purpose*, because *real men
aren't pretty* and because *real people know what's important*. (You'll
notice that even lots of swimsuits for *girls* go out of their way to
avoid being "too beautiful".)
