I don't know what your native language is, but most modern languages
have homonyms, words which sound the same but have different meanings.
There are often also words which are even written the same but have
different meanings. And then in some dialects and local pronunciations
there are more.
Spoken and written language was not usualy designed, it grew and most
languages added words from other sources. English is probably the worst
for that, because not only did it have several nationalities invading
the land (Picts, Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Norse, French) but it also
absorbed words from trading partners (Greek, Arabic, Indian, Chinese...)
and many of these words which now sound alike come from different
sources.
