Kafka once wrote a story about how an emperor, on his deathbad, sends a
message to YOU. I can't find the text of it on the Internet.
The messenger must fight through the crowds to get out of the palace,
fight through the hordes surrounding the palace, and then undertake a
long and daring journey to reach you. You know that the chances that
this vastly important message will reach you are slim to none, but you
sit at your window and wait for it.
Writing a few years earlier, Stephen Crane wrote this poem:
A man said to the universe:
"Sir I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation."
I think all of us like the idea that we have been somehow chosen and
selected to be marked out for special treatment. It's a seductive
thought: it gives order and reason to the universe, and feeds our sense
of ego at the same time.
