dino puraani - in the old days
khicdi si daadhi (a beard like khichree ? )
> और सीट के पीछे लटकती हुई
and behind "hangs" loosely
> लम्बी लहराती कमीज़।
a long undulated shirt
> चौड़ा सफेद पायजामा पहने
wearing a wide white pyjama
> वे पेडल मारते चले जाते,
he is moving by kicking in the pedals
> उसी रास्ते,
on his streets
> दिन प्रतिदिन।
day after day
>
> बच्चे खुशी से चीखते, चिल्लाते,
they children happily crying and shouting
> "दादाजी! दादाजी!"
"grandpa ! grandpa ! "
> और दूर दूर तक
and far far
> उनका पीछा करते,
they are following him
> जब तक वे थक नहीं जाते,
as long as he doesn't get tired
> और एक पैर पर सायकल टिकाकर,
and is stopping the cycle with one foot
> अपनी जेब से रंग बिरंगी पपरमिंट
in his purse he has colorful peppermint bonbons
> निकालकर बच्चों को देते।
and before he is going away he's giving to the children

> उन्होंने फिर चलना शुरू ही किया होता,
but they again are going after him
> अतृप्त, वे चीखते, "दादाजी! दादाजी!"
then , they cry , "grandpa ! grandpa ! "
> उन्हें चिढ़ाते हुए,
they are crying (cidhaate ???)
> जब तक वे उनके घर से
as long as he does not go
> बहुत दूर तक निकल नहीं जाते।
far away from his home

> यह सब भूल गए
he forgot everything

> और बच्चे अपनी अपनी राह चले गए।
and the children have gone on his ways
> एक दिन अचानक मुझे दादाजी मिल गए,
one day i met dadaji suddenly
> एक पुरानी ढहती हुई झोपड़ी के सामने
on an old day (dahti) , in front of the hut
> चारपाई पर बैठे हुए।
he was sitting on a "charpye"
> मैं संकोच करता सा रुका,
i tried to stop him decently
> "दा दादाजी," मैं हिचकिचाया।
"gra ... grandpa" , i was stumbling
> उनके सीधी तरफ लकवा मार गया था
he was already dead
> और वे मुझे सुन नहीं पाए।
and could not hear me
> अपना मुंह उनके कान के करीब लाकर
his mouth was almost like his ear
> मैं कुछ ऊंचे से बोला, "दादाजी"
and i called loudly , "dadaji"
> वे धीरे से रुकते रुकते
he slowly stopped
> एक करवट मुड़े,
and and gave me a sidekick
> और एक लाल पपरमिंट
and a red bonbon
> जेब से निकालकर
putting it out from his pocket
> मेरे हाथ पर रख दी।
and giving it into my hand
