When I stopped attending community college (got a job...) and lost
access to classes and the Sensei, it became harder to do the
self-study -- there's no 'answer key' at the back of the book to make
sure you're not learning a conjugation that's wrong or something.
But, through my new job (it's at a military base,) I found a new
sensei, so the books are once again useful.
RECOMMEND: get yourself a Sensei to keep you on track and catch your
innocent mistakes before they fossilize and become too hard to correct
later. Try posting notices at: Japanese grocery stores and
restaurants; colleges; military bases, etc. A real live nihonjin you
can meet and study with once a week is an excellent investment.
