The Genki textbooks were used at the community college at which I first took
a Nihongo class. IMO it was a fine enough text (along with workbook, and
the CDs), but it is designed for use in a class setting. I didn't have any
real objections to it and appreciated that the Kana is started right away.
Now I'm at a different college and they use the Yookoso textbooks, which are
probably more practical for daily living vocab, but the books seem to be a
mess editorially speaking (different versions conflict with workbook, CDs,
etc.)
In between these two colleges I spent a year in Japan. Nothing can replace
hearing a language everyday.
