Andy,
I looked at building a 6 core system, but I can create and build a very
very large image in Gimp and inkscape files with the quad and 4 gigs of
memory. I am using the old handbrake that does great DVIX conversion and
have no need for the proprietary closed end h.264 video format and I
never play any games.
I decided had no reason for that much processing power... I run the
faster Linux operating system, as I tossed out Microsoft in 2007...
If I need more processing power I start the AntiX system, it flys with no
overhead...
But you do have a lot of money tied up in a system... I am after a 27
inch 16:9 ratio monitor with the 2560x1440 resolution. NEC is too
expensive, $1,300, and i have not found the Dell priced for my
pocketbook...
