I'll review some of the points from the FAQ 5.5 soon here.

"The Madd1!" <kor...@verizon.net> [on 6-2004]
# Sweet. You got some of the variants in there. Thats kewl,
# as I've never seen some of those before. I do have a
# question for you about the various variant rules/
#
# Does it matter which Risk sets you use??

any number of boards could be used in variant play, including
other gameboards. rules have been constructed, for example,
for combinations like Risk + Monopoly.

# For instance, I currently own a Risk 1959 edition,
# Risk Castle risk set from 1986, a 1975 version,
# and the 1993 edition. Could I, for example, use
# those to play 4 world risk?

since you specify "sets" you'd have to reconcile any
differentiation in rulesets from Castle Risk and the
rest of these Risk games you mention, since Castle
Risk is in effect a very different game (it overlaps),
is played on a different map (6 European Empires),
with additional cards, has a different turn structure
and a different relation to water-based attacks.
