Top seeds Lleyton Hewitt and Maria Sharapova did their best in the
second round, but could only win in three sets at the $860,000 Japan Open.
Lleyton Hewitt of Australia surprised the audience with his 6-0 3-6 6-1
win over Japanese player Goichi Motomura, who was the bookies'
pre-tournament favorite to win at the tournament.
Maria Sharapova, who upset Australian Samantha Stosur
with a 6-4 1-6 6-3 victory. According to Reuters, Sharapova's win
was a blessing for tournament organisers as six of the eight women's
