My Dearest Gustav,
I confess you have me at a loss this fine Sunday evening. I know very
little about this series, it having been posted some time ago in afp.
As for Russian or German naturism, I know even less. My intuition
tells me that these pictures were probably produced after Perestroika
and the realignment of the Soviet states ... considerably more recent
that the 1950's. The portrayal of naturism and nudism in popular
culture was quite popular and widespread among industrialized Western
societies of the late 19th Century ... I don't entertain the slightest
doubt it was a reaction to the dehumanizing aspect of modern times.
I believe the present persecutions have resulted from the 1920's in
the United States, when the popularisation of movies and mass media
exposed the more "proper and morally circumspect" to "offensive
images." [Please see Steve Leyland for more on this subject!], most
particularly rather risque depictions in the early American
Cinema-Intolerance by D. W. Griffith comes to mind. The resulting
outcry gave birth to the Hayes Office, the first and certainly not the
last decency policing organization. Of course, righteous morality
always takes the high ground and the United States has moved to make
its particular view of morality the international standard ... by
persuasive or coercion.
I recall the President Clinton scandals and the subsequent impeachment
proceeding, in which the Americans insisted the whole row had nothing
to do with sexual behavior, but perjury. Of course, we knew the truth
... deep down in their hypocritical hearts, it had everything to do
with sex.
Good luck on your search for Russian naturism. Perhaps you will see
fit to post your findings at our gallery!
All my best,
Victor
