I don't clearly remember the 50s, but I suspect it was a more
complicated era than we tend now to think. Certainly huge, rapid
changes were underway in the aftermath of the Second World War. As for
the 60s -- at least in the West -- this was an extremely disorienting
period for individuals as well as societies. All the old certainties
-- about sex, politics, religion, war & peace, every sphere of life --
seemed to be cracking and tumbling.
Most of this was healthy, and came as a result of unprecedented
prosperity and rapid development and progress. But it was also
extremely unsettling. The sheer speed of change made the world seem to
be spinning out of control. Then there was the darker aspect of the
decade which came to be represented by Vietnam, and the deadly showdown
between East and West starkly symbolized by the Berlin Wall.
Looking back, perhaps it all seems simple and somehow idyllic. But
then I suspect our own confused and troubled era will look that way 40
years from now.
