I remember seeing this in a TV program which, as I recall, it was narrated
by Desmond Morris ("The Naked Ape"), about customs and culture.
It is some sort of coming of age / being reborn Italian ritual.
The sapling tree is split so that the boy can be past through it (being
reborn) and then the tree is bandaged to as to continue to grow.
The boy's grandparents are the ones holding him. Not sure about the man in
the background -- father / uncle / friend ?
