Idolatry comes from the word 'idolos' an idol, or graven image, and
'latreia' or 'worship' in Ancient Greek.
It means the worship of God in the form of pictures and images, as well as
the worship as God of other items which are not God.
It is forbidden in the ten commandments, but this is often ignored by some
churches of the catholic, orthodox and even anglican persuasions, leading
Moslims to think that Christians practise idolatry. This is not the case.
Those who believe themselves Christians but bow down to images of Mary or
even of Jesus are further from pleasing God than Muslims are, who, while
they have many errors, at least are relatively free of systematic idolatry.
It is also possible to idolise other people, possessions, etc, and this is
likewise wrong, but I would call it non-systematic idolatry. Nothing should
come above God. Nevertheless, this is an almost universal sin, and one that
we all need to repent of on a regular basis.
