When P. G. Wodehouse was asked why he tended to populate his Jeeves and
Wooster stories with rich aunts and uncles who controlled allowances rather
than rich parents, he said that seeing odd characters as aunts and uncles
are less likely to upset people, than seeing them as the parents of
characters the reader might identify with. he said it was easier to keep a
comedic tone in the tales without offending anyone by sticking to the
avuncular, rather than the parental relationship.
