With respect to this matter? It seems to me that purporting to lead
people to truth through deceiving them is morally reprehensible while
it remains questionable if a path of lies and deception can lead to
truth.

Niccolo aside for the moment, Pratchett has a rather good bit on this
in the book "Small Gods".
